AQA Combined Science

Science is a core subject which is studied by all students. The main areas of science can be broadly separated into biology, chemistry and physics and students will study all three disciplines whichever route is followed in the subject.

In addition to examinations in these three areas, students will all be assessed in their knowledge and understanding of science through practical assessments.

Students will follow one of two routes in science depending on their abilities, skills and prior attainment.  Students will be given the opportunity to study separate sciences (chosen as an option subject) or will follow the combined science pathway.

Science underpins the most fundamental aspects of everyday life, and a sound understanding of scientific principles is essential in our rapidly advancing 21st century society.  Many of the skills taught are transferable to other subjects and will support learning throughout the curriculum.

Combined Science

Biology topics:
Cell Biology; Organisation; Infection and Response; Bioenergetics; Homeostasis and Response; Inheritance, Variation and Evolution and Ecology.

Chemistry topics:
Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table; Bonding, Structure, and the Properties of Matter; Quantitative Chemistry; Chemical Changes; Energy Changes; The Rate and Extent of Chemical Change; Organic Chemistry; Chemical Analysis; Chemistry of the Atmosphere and Using Resources.

Physics topics:
nergy; Electricity; Particle Model of Matter; Atomic Structure; Forces; Waves; Magnetism and Electromagnetism.

Practical Assessments:
Students will complete examination board set practical tasks during lesson time and these will be followed by a 1 hour written paper to assess their understanding

Assessment

There are six papers: two biology, two chemistry and two physics.  Each of the papers will assess knowledge and understanding from each distinct topic area.   Exam questions will consist of multiple choice, structured, closed short answer, and open response

Progression

A pass in science allows student to progress to A levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Level 3 Applied Science at Key Stage 5.
