Entry Requirements
A minimum of grade 5 equivalent at GCSE level is required in English Language or Literature as well as a wide range of other GCSEs.
Course Description
This qualification is linear, meaning that students will sit all the A-level exams at the end of their A-level course.
The A-level introduces students to methods of language analysis, exploring concepts of audience, purpose, genre, mode and representation.
The course consists of three units of study. Firstly, Language, the Individual and Society, a unit assessed by written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes (40% of A-level). In the second unit, Language Diversity and Change, students are again assessed by written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes (40% of A-level). The third unit, a non-exam assessment, focuses on Language in Action. For this unit students produce a language investigation (2,000 words excluding data) and a piece of original writing and commentary (1,500 words total). These are assessed by teachers and moderated by AQA. The final unit accounts for 20% of A-level.

A level English Literature would complement advanced level qualifications including History, Modern Foreign Languages, Law, Psychology and Sociology.
