Entry Requirements

Minimum of 5 grade 5 (new grading structure) at GCSE or equivalent with English and 6 in maths.  At least a grade 6 in GCSE Chemistry  or Combined Science  is the minimum requirement.

 

Course Description

There are three areas of chemistry  which are studied.

Physical Organic Inorganic
Thermodynamics. Optical Isomerism. Properties of Period 3 elements and their oxides.
Rate equations. Aldehydes, Ketones, Carboxylic Acids and Derivatives. Transition metals.
Equilibrium constant Kc for homogeneous systems. Aromatic Chemistry. Reactions of ions in aqueous solution. 

Electrode potentials and electrochemical cells .

Amines, Amino Acids, Proteins and DNA.  
Acids and Bases. Polymers.  
  Organic synthesis, NMR and Chromatography.  

Assessment

The course will be assessed via three written papers including relevant  practical skills:

Paper 1: 2 hours long consisting of 105 marks: a mixture  of short and long answer questions.

Paper 2: 2 hours long consisting of 105 marks: a mixture  of short and long answer questions.

Paper 3: 2 hours long consisting of 90 marks (40 marks: practical and data analysis 20 marks: questions testing across the specification and 30 marks: multiple choice questions).

A level Chemistry would complement advanced level qualifications in Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Health and Social Care, Sociology or Psychology.
