Entry Requirements

Minimum of 5 A*-C grades / grade 5 (new grading structure) at GCSE or equivalent with English and maths.  At least a grade 6 in GCSE Biology or Combined Biology is the minimum requirement.

Course Description

There are eight core areas of study at A level Biology.

  • Biological.Molecules.
  • Cells.
  • Organisms exchange substance with their environment.
  • Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms.
  • Energy Transfers in and between organisms.
  • Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments.
  • Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems.
  • The control of gene expression.

Assessment

Paper 1: Any content for topics 1-4, including relevant practical skills.  2 hours long consisting of 91 marks (76 marks: a mixture of short and long answer questions and 15 marks: extended response questions).

Paper 2: Any content for topics 5-8, including relevant practical skills.  2 hours long consisting of 91 marks (76 marks: a mixture of short and long answer questions and 15 marks: comprehension questions).

Paper 3: Any content for topics 1-8, including relevant practical skills.  2 hours long consisting of 78 marks (38 marks: structured questions, including practical techniques, 15 marks: critical analysis of given experimental data and 25 marks: one essay from a choice of two titles).

A level Biology would complement advanced level qualifications in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Health and Social Care, Sociology or Psychology. It is also typically chosen as the preferred Science option to accompany non-Science qualifications.
