NCFE Level 1 / 2 Technical Award

This Level 2 qualification helps you build the skills needed for a career in the music industry or other creative fields like film, television, and theatre. It also serves as a great stepping stone towards music colleges, apprenticeships, or starting your own music production business.

Course Content

  • Unit 1: Introduction to Music Technology and the Music Business
    Explore the roles and responsibilities within the music industry, how technology drives the business, and how to market and sell your own music.
  • Unit 2: The Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)
    Learn to use music production software to create your own tracks.
  • Unit 3: Musical Elements, Styles, and Technology
    Develop your understanding of musical elements and create music in a variety of styles.
  • Unit 4: Sound Creation
    Use microphones and technology to create original sounds, including sound effects and voiceovers for movies, TV, and podcasts.
  • Unit 5: Multitrack Recording
    Gain hands-on experience in studio recording, mixing, and studio management.

Assessment

Non-Exam Assessment (NEA) – 60%

  • A portfolio of work developed over the course, showcasing your readiness for the music industry.
  • Includes written documentation and audio creations.
  • Worth 120 marks, completed over 17 hours.

Examined Assessment – 40%

  • A 1.5-hour written exam testing your knowledge and skills in music technology.
  • Worth 80 marks.

Skills Needed for this course:

  • Passion for music and creativity – No prior experience in music production is required.
  • No need to play an instrument or sing – While musical experience can be helpful, it’s not essential. This course will teach you everything from scratch.
