Art

Art is an essential part of all students' aesthetic and cultural education. At Joseph Leckie Academy our principle aims are:

  • For students to produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • For students to become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques .
  • For students to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • Students will know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Art in Year 7

Course Content

During the first term personal identity is explored. Students create images that reflect ideas of themselves, working from observation, memory and imagination. Alongside this they will learn about ideas and methods used by other artists.

Throughout the spring term students produce work inspired by buildings and architecture, producing work based on architectural features from a variety of materials. They will explore the work of architects, designers and sculptors.

Figure drawing is the theme for the summer term. Students study proportion and use a variety of materials to produce work that demonstrates the influence of an artist or crafts person they have studied.

Gifted and Talented Provision

Programmes of study are developed to allow students the flexibility of expression for those talented in art. They will always be encouraged to produce high level work which demonstrate their talents.

Extra Curricular Opportunities

Opportunities for developing skills are always offered at the end of the normal Academy day.

Assessment

  • Assessments will be used to track student progress, inform decisions about sets and create individual targets which will raise aspirations.
  • Projects are graded on completion and achievements are discussed during the progress of work.
  • Students develop their ideas through investigations informed by contextual and other sources, developing analytical and cultural understanding.
  • They will explore and refine their ideas through experimenting and selecting resources, media, materials, techniques and processes.
  • They record ideas, observations developing their skills at recording from observation.
  • Every term students will have developed a personal, informed and meaningful response to the term topic.

  • Pencil, rubber, sharpener, ruler, pencil crayons, black fine liner pen.

Art in Key Stage 3

Course Content

  • Students explore artworks from various cultures around the world and the ways in which artists take ideas from other cultures and synthesise these into new creative forms Practical work includes Art, 2D, Line, Tone, Shape, Form, Collage, Printmaking, Digital media. Design, 3D, Colour, Pattern, Texture, Textiles, Clay.
  • Students explore natural forms as the starting point for either 2 Dimensional or 3 Dimensional work. Practical work includes Art, Design, 2D, 3D, Line, Colour, Shape, Form, Painting, Digital media, Pattern, Structure.
  • Students investigate letter design and use, exploring the variety of ways in which lettering is utilised to communicate on a variety of levels. They develop an understanding of how designers and artists have utilised letter form and translate their own personal response into 2 or 3D.
