Personal Development Programme (PDP)
As a part of your child’s educational experience at Joseph Leckie Academy, we aim to promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive taught Personal Development Programme (PDP). This gives children and young people the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live healthy, safe, productive and fulfilled lives, both now and in the future.
As a part of personal development, we teach about relationships and sex education. We are clear that parents and carers are the prime educators for children on many of these matters, however we see our role as an Academy to complement and reinforce this role as an important part of delivering a good education. Our programme will build on knowledge acquired at primary level and develop further pupils’ understanding of relationships, with an increased focus on areas such as sexuality and gender respect, as well as knowledge about intimate relationships and sex, this occurs in the curriculum at a similar time to reproduction education in key stage three Science, ensuring students learn about relationships at an appropriate time. More information on statutory relationship and sex education is available here;
Alongside relationships, we also study health and wellbeing, preparing students for the challenges that face students as they grow up and mature. Learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up will give children and young people the information, skills and positive values to have safe, fulfilling lives and help them take responsibility for their own well-being.
Past relationships and wellbeing, we also provide economic and citizenship education. We introduce basic finance and outline dangers associated with gambling. Finally as students start to form their pathway to their chosen careers, we introduce them to types of employment and the pathways to a wide range of careers.
